I don't often drink Soda, so fortunately, cutting it out of my diet is no real struggle. I do have the occasional orange or apple juice, and several teas and coffees throughout the day - always sweetened. Usually the last thing I will go for is water, unless I'm exercising - because who wants apple juice after a workout?
Sidenote: I get endless amounts of chirping from Peter because he says "Soda" is the American nickname and we Canadians say "Pop". Apparently there was some sort of agreement made many years ago.
But back to my point, I realized that not only was I not drinking enough water but I was also taking in WAY too much extra sugar - definitely not doing myself any favours. So, I have been trying to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day and in an effort to make it a bit more exciting I've been infusing it with different fruit and herb flavours and have noticed a couple of things: First - drinking water is much more enjoyable when you add stuff to it , healthy stuff of course. Second - the less sugar I consume the sweeter everything else tastes. I'm telling you, if you don't enjoy fruit now it's because the sugar you are consuming in everything else is KILLING your taste buds.
But this isn't about what you should cut out so much but about what you can add in - lots and lots of yummy tasting water. So, I've created a list of some of my favourite infused water recipes for you here;
Lemon/Lime & Cucumber
This is pretty good standby and one that you find in spas all over the world. There's a very good health reason for that, this combination is excellent at cleansing and detoxifying your body. Plus the fresh taste does have a relaxing and energizing quality all at the same time! Like yoga.
It's one of the easiest for me since I generally always have these items in my fridge all the time and one of my favourites for an early morning pick me up.
Berries & Orange
This is probably the sweetest of all the recipes, and I LOVE it a lot. Orange in general is one of my favourite flavours to add. My recommendation is not to add too much orange in this case because it can overpower the berries a bit. Also I like to add half fresh berries and half frozen when I can for a nice afternoon drink.
Pineapple & Sage
This is a bit of a weird combination for some but these flavours work surprisingly well together. The sage gives an earthy tea like feel to the drink and the pineapple adds load of sweetness and a tropical feel.
Full disclosure, Peter isn't a big fan of this one, he prefers sweeter drinks like the orange/berry so I don't make it too often - but I love it and think it is great for when you want to change things up a little.
Strawberry & Mint
This is also an old standby and pretty easy for most people, I like to infuse this one overnight to get a really strong berry flavour. I also like to muddle some of the strawberries and add the mint sparingly since it is such a strong herb.
Of course, I have tried many, many alternatives to the ones I have listed here such as; Lemon/Orange & Mint, Berries & Basil, Pineapple & Lime etc. I occasionally will make a big jug with almost every item I've listed! The key is to experiment with it - I think that is half of the fun and a great way to get more water into your day to day!
