My spring-cleaning ritual will begin sometime in the next few weeks. I want to start right NOW because I am impatient for warm weather and I think, maaayybeee once I clean, it will make it official and the sun will have no choice but to stay out and melt everything. No?
Either way I have two dogs and that makes it near impossible to clean anything right now and have it last for more than an hour. I’m sure some of you know how messy life can be with dogs – especially with more than one – and especially in the Spring. Outside everything is melting and the sidewalks, yards and parks are piled with dirt and garbage that, until now, was hiding in the snow. The ground is ALWAYS wet, muddy or both. This leads to very dirty paws, messy living room floors and a stressed out McKinnon household. I haven’t even mentioned the fact that spring time shedding is intense – you guys, I hate vacuuming so much.
Needless to say, it is hard enough to keep the house together, without throwing in all of the spring-cleaning tasks right now. So, I will wait until the snow has melted and the outside world is just a little bit less messy. This has not stopped me from preparing for it though, obviously.
You should understand something about me before you look at all this and think I am crazy – I am a complete Type A personality. I like things to be clean – like new house, never been touched clean. I also love organization and planning. Staples and Solutions are my favorite places ever. However I realize that not everyone functions this way, some of you have much less free time than I do, or greater responsibilities – such as kids – that make it harder for you to find time. Some of you just are not as concerned about this as I am – I get it.
So when making my checklist I tried to keep you all in mind and I broke it down into three categories;
Basic – For the most part this is stuff that you would normally do during a deep cleaning of your home, there is still work involved, but you shouldn’t have to stretch yourself too much
Extras – This involves a bit more of a meticulous cleaning, extra time, extra work but also big strides in keeping a tip-top home.
Bonus points – This is for those of you that are like me and want to see your house sparkle.

You can mix and match from the different categories depending on your priority. I tried to include as much as possible – and there are some things you may be surprised by – for example I included resealing bathroom grout/caulking in the basic section – this is because it’s something that can go such a long way, is not incredibly labor intensive, and doesn’t have to be done every year, but again you can always leave this out of your routine.
I also added an “extras” sheet at the back with a few things that maybe overlooked but you may want to think about - such as checking the batteries on your smoke detectors.
Hopefully you guys find this useful! I’d love to hear your feedback or suggestions on it! Soon I will share with you some of the natural cleaning products I will be using, supplies you may need and of course a fun playlist!
